Two Kashmiri Students Selected For 2024 Rhodes Scholarship

Two Kashmiri students have been selected for the Rhodes Scholars program for the year 2024, following a rigorous national selection process that attracted over 900 applications.

After two rounds of preliminary interviews, a distinguished panel chaired by Nirupama Rao, former Foreign Secretary, shortlisted 13 finalists, ultimately selecting five scholars, who will embark on fully sponsored postgraduate studies at Oxford University in October 2024, joining a cohort of over 100 scholars from around the world.

Kashmiri Students Selected for Rhodes Scholarship in 2024

This year’s recipients of the prestigious Rhodes Scholarships include two individuals from Kashmir, a lawyer dedicated to internet freedom, a history enthusiast aspiring to create a digital archive of Kashmir’s history.

Asma Shakeel hailing from Kashmir is a fourth-year student majoring in International History at Georgetown University in Qatar. She will study Global and Imperial History in her post-graduation at Oxford and digitize the Kashmir history.

Mohammad Zayaan is a final year BA LLB (Hons) student at Gujarat National Law University, Gandhi Nagar, who is also from Jammu and Kashmir. He will pursue an MPhil in Socio-Legal Research at the University of Oxford, followed by a DPhil in Socio-Legal Studies.

Others, who were selected from India include Joann Cherian, Ayan Gupta and Siddhant Dhawan.

Applications for the 2025 Rhodes Scholarship will open in June 2024, offering another opportunity for aspiring scholars to pursue this prestigious fellowship.

The Rhodes Scholarship, the world’s oldest graduate fellowship, has been based at the University of Oxford since 1903.

The Scholarships for India began in 1947 and were awarded annually to five outstanding applicants. The selection process seeks individuals with proven academic excellence, exceptional character, leadership qualities, and a commitment to addressing global challenges.
